Mirror film grades that match the shot list.
By Ms Zainab Samodien, Venue Producer
Mirror film grades that match the shot list. At Astonishing Studio we write from Woodstock and regional desks, not from a brochure. Film grade honesty is the note we wish producers had before the week turned loud. We keep the language plain, the steps countable, and the next link obvious: an activation path, a venue, or a booked hour with our contact form.
A grade reference can drift fast once a launch moves from edit suite to venue screen. Daylight leaking through glazing, a hired LED wall set too blue, or a retail unit dimmed after trading hours will all push the image away from the approved look. Film grade honesty means writing down what the shot needs, what the screen can actually hold, and who signs off the compromise before doors open.
Pull stills from the actual selects, not from a mood folder built months earlier. Mark the intended blacks, skin tone range, and highlight limit beside the frame, then keep one printed copy at video village and one with the venue producer. If the screen test raises a problem, route the evidence through our contact form so the note carries the city, venue name, and the frame that failed. Use Film grade honesty as a working instruction, not a line for the wall.
If footage matters, record the actual light on site before approving finishes or screen content. Send a short clip from the guest viewpoint and mention any mixed colour temperatures, because a setup that looks rich to the eye can turn muddy on camera.
Cape Town winter cloud can flatten contrast by mid-afternoon, while inland sun can clip product detail long before crew call wraps. Festival generators, mall trading lights, and load-shedding workarounds also change how footage reads once it leaves the grading monitor. Keep extension leads, charged playback devices, and a known-good reference screen in the kit, because colour decisions made off one dim laptop usually travel badly.
Go to /activations when the grade note belongs to a product reveal, and /venues when the image problem is really a room problem. Share this dispatch with the producer, DIT, or screen supplier who needs the same frame reference before install starts. Pair it with a venue recce photo so the decision sits next to the actual wall, window, or truss position.
Move from this dispatch to activations for build formats, or to venues for site conditions and access patterns.
From Woodstock, Cape Town, send the lighting brief, reference frame, or venue restriction through our contact form. Include the finish, glare concern, and any mall or festival rule that affects how the film reads on camera.
