Dispatch
Acoustic soft goods before loud pride.
By Ms Kelebogile Tshangana, Creative Lead
Before the PA opens, soft goods do the first bit of work. Drapes, carpet tiles, wrapped panels and furniture pads take the edge off rattle in marquees, shop courts and backstage holding areas. On pride builds and launch nights, that prep matters most during crew radio checks and vendor briefings.
AuthorAcoustic soft goods before loud pride. At Astonishing Studio we write from Woodstock and regional desks, not from a brochure. Soft before SPL is the note we wish producers had before the week turned loud. We keep the language plain, the steps countable, and the next link obvious: an activation path, a venue, or a booked hour with our contact form.
A South African festival week often turns noisy long before gates open. Forklifts beep, truss lands, generators hum, and every hard surface throws speech back at the crew. Soft before SPL is the note for that hour, when a few blankets, drapes or wrapped flats can make a briefing audible enough to prevent the wrong cable run or the wrong queue line.
Start with the zone that must carry speech without shouting. In a retail launch, that may be the stockroom brief point or the fitting area behind a reveal wall; at a festival, it is often artist holding, accreditation, or the client table beside generator wash. Pair the note with an activation when you need the soft treatment tied to a branded build, or send the venue name through our contact form when the issue is specific to one room.
For a sound note, record the ambient level before the PA goes up and mention what guests need to hear first. If this is near a stage, food court, or retail entrance, say where speech starts getting lost so the system can be tuned for voices before impact.
Cape Town wind changes how fabric hangs and how quickly temporary wraps start flapping against steel. On the Highveld, dust gets into velcro, zip tracks and adhesive edges, so checks need a cloth and a second pass before client walk-through. In malls, loading times and fire rules affect what can be draped, what must stay clear, and where acoustic treatment can sit without blocking trading sightlines.
Go to /activations when the acoustic fix must sit inside a branded moment. Use /venues when the site itself is the problem, especially for echo-prone courts, warehouse shells or outdoor compounds. If the team needs a working note rather than inspiration, pass this dispatch on with the main problem, the owner and the exception still visible.
Compare site fit against the venues we have worked, or send the main problem and your checklist through our contact form. Keep the exception visible when you pass it on, whether that is wind at a wine farm, a mall loading bay cap, or a crew handover before doors.
For handover details and edge cases, use our contact form and include the city, venue access point, and the one exception that could change the pack list. Woodstock, Cape Town handles this dispatch when a festival plan needs a named owner and a visible next check.
