Dispatch
Timed corridor walks for brand films.
By Ms Kelebogile Tshangana, Creative Lead
Timed corridor walks for brand films. At Astonishing Studio we write from Woodstock and regional desks, not from a brochure. Walk timing calm is the note we wish producers had before the week turned loud. We keep the language plain, the steps countable, and the next link obvious: an activation path, a venue, or a booked hour with our contact form.
Brand-film walk shots usually fail at the same points: people start too fast, the turn at the end bunches up, and a door swing steals two beats from the frame. On a South African site, that often happens in a mall service passage, a hotel link corridor, or a festival back-of-house route with radios cutting across the lane. This dispatch puts timing on paper before crew call, with start marks, hold points, and one owner for the count. The aim is a repeatable pass that camera, talent, and venue staff can all read without an argument.
Tape the first step, the lens line, and the stop box before anyone rehearses. Then note the activation name, the person calling the count, and the one condition that may alter pace, such as wind through an open dock door or a delayed security lock-off. Keep the route card beside the crew board, and write in through our contact form when access or spacing needs checking against another activation. A counted route is more useful than a long concept deck when the venue manager needs a simple answer.
Walk timing is easier to fix when you map the route from arrival to interaction to exit. Include how long each section takes on foot, and point out any lift, escalator, crossing, or security check that stretches the journey in a Sandton or waterfront setting.
Cape Town passages can pick up gusts from loading bays, while Gauteng venues often bring hard echo that hides the count for talent. Retail launches add trading-hour restrictions, cleaning staff crossings, and security doors that cannot remain wedged open. Power cuts matter here too, especially where corridor lighting shifts from full house power to backup circuits. Check battery levels, test colour change on camera, and confirm whether venue music will be off during takes.
For the next step, read /activations when the walk needs branded moments, or /venues when the corridor, mall lane, or backstage route is still undecided. Add this note to the recce pack so camera, styling, and traffic control are timing the same stretch, not three different versions of it.
Continue to activations, venues, or our contact form.
Bring the route length and first call time to our contact form. Woodstock, Cape Town is the desk on our side, and the useful details on yours are the venue name, corridor width, and whether the walk sits indoors or in wind.
